Tibetan Wool Rug Care & Cleaning Guide

At CHANGPHEL, we believe that durability is the virtue of a well-made object. Precious as it is, our handwoven Tibetan rug is anything but delicate. Caring for it is as simple and unpretentious as life on the high plateau itself — with occasional gentle dusting, its warmth can accompany you for a lifetime.

Unlike blended wools processed mechanically in New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere, CHANGPHEL works exclusively with wool from sheep raised above 4,000 meters on the Northern Tibet Plateau — one of the few remaining non-hybridized sheep breeds in the world. Every July, herders gather and comb the fleece by hand, yielding precious and rare natural materials for Tibetan rugs.

Northern Tibetan wool is long and coarse, giving it outstanding durability and resistance to pilling. Its rich natural lanolin provides excellent water-repellency and stain resistance, while the hollow structure of the fibers delivers remarkable insulation, sound absorption and breathability. These innate qualities not only extend the life of your rug — they make it remarkably easy to care for and well suited to everyday living throughout the seasons.

In daily life, simply keep the following in mind, and your CHANGPHEL rug will only grow more beautiful with time and memory.

Routine Care
Every CHANGPHEL rug undergoes a professional deep clean before it arrives at your home.
For routine care, vacuuming once a week is usually sufficient to keep dust under control. Always vacuum in the direction of the pile. To find the pile direction, run your hand gently across the surface: the direction that feels smoother is the direction of the pile; moving against it will create more resistance. When needed, turn the rug over and vacuum the backing.
If your rug has fringes, fold them underneath before vacuuming to prevent wear.

Stain & Spot Cleaning
Because Northern Tibetan wool is naturally rich in lanolin, CHANGPHEL handwoven rugs offer excellent natural stain resistance — no additional stain protection is usually needed. In most cases, promptly addressing stains before they penetrate the fibers can greatly reduce the need for intensive cleaning.

  • Liquid spills (juice, tea, etc.): blot immediately with paper towels, then wipe with clean water.
  • Broken glass: lift large pieces with tape. For smaller fragments, use a damp cotton ball to pick them up carefully, then vacuum the area thoroughly.
  • Dried stains: wipe with a cold, damp cloth, then sprinkle baking soda or salt over the area to absorb moisture; once dry, vacuum clean. For gentle cleaning, a mild wool-safe detergent with a soft brush or damp towel works well. (Note: avoid bleach and stiff brushes, which can damage the rug's surface.)
  • Chewing gum: place an ice-filled plastic bag over the gum. Once fully hardened, gently remove the residue with a soft brush and clean the spot with a small amount of mild wool-safe detergent. (Note: do not use chemical solvents, which can damage the wool fibers.)

Deep Cleaning
To keep your rug fresh and in good condition, we recommend a deep clean at least once a year.

Rugs under one square meter (about 10.8 sq ft) can be washed at home: use your washing machine's delicate cycle, or fully soak the rug (extend the soaking time for heavier soiling) with a mild detergent, then scrub gently with a towel or soft brush. Hang it to dry in a well-ventilated area with sunlight. To speed up drying, use the machine's spin cycle.
(Note: always wash in cold water. Never use a tumble dryer, fabric softener, or chemical solvents.)

FAQ
Q1: I have rhinitis or allergies — will the rug collect dust or harbor dust mites?
A: Wool rugs can naturally trap dust within their pile, which limits the amount of dust circulating in the air. Regular vacuuming helps remove accumulated dust and allergens from the rug.

Q2: Will the rug affect indoor air quality?
A: Every CHANGPHEL rug is born from more than 20 handcrafted steps and over 700 hours of work. The entire process is done by hand, with no harmful chemical treatments involved. When properly maintained, a CHANGPHEL rug can be kept clean and fresh for everyday indoor use. Keep the rug aired and dry, and regular vacuuming removes hair, dust and dust-mite debris.

Q3: Can I use a Tibetan rug if I have pets?
A: Yes. The natural character of wool often makes the rug an inviting place for pets to rest. They'll happily settle on the surface. Smaller rugs also make perfect resting mats for pets. CHANGPHEL rugs are handwoven without backing glue and allow air to circulate naturally; if your pet vomits or has an accident on the rug, simply rinse with clean water or wipe with a mild cleaner. The wool's natural breathability helps prevent the buildup of odors and moisture when the rug is kept clean and dry, keeping daily use hygienic and comfortable.
