Our Artisans
“Shannan”
“Without nature, there can be no people. Without people, there can be no craft. Without craft, there can be no CHANGPHEL.”
At the heart of CHANGPHEL lies its people. Shannan, Tibet, the birthplace of Tibetan culture, is home to our workshop for the creation and design of handwoven Tibetan rugs. Here, we bring together and nurture a community of exceptional artisans from across the Tibetan region.
The Tibetan people’s innate closeness to nature has, to a great extent, shaped an aesthetic that comes naturally to them: free-spirited and bold, passionate yet romantic. It is a rare gift—the instinct to bring colors together in the most unexpected yet harmonious ways, and to express the natural world of the highlands through lines that feel both timeless and contemporary.
In the workshop, the artisans’ voices can often be heard rising in song—a natural way of expressing emotion and making sense of everyday life. Their lingering melodies seem to carry us across the vastness of the land, bringing the blessings of the highlands to each Tibetan rug. Every piece we create is woven, knot by knot, to the sound of their singing.
Enduring Luxury
“Creating wealth and taking responsibility for society are not at odds. In fact, they reinforce one another.”
We believe in the enduring allure of craftsmanship. In the accelerating tide of the AI era, our idea of luxury is to resist the urge to compete with speed in a world filled with things made in haste—to return time to the human hand, to embrace complexity and slowness without fear, and to hold a sincere reverence for every strand of wool entrusted to our hands.
We care deeply for the well-being of every local artisan, respecting their beliefs and culture. We treat the creatures of this wilderness with gentleness, with boundless gratitude for what they give. And we devote ourselves to protecting every mountain, glacier, and lake across this highland of snow.
