Purely Handcrafted “Core-Spun Yarn” Eco-Friendly Space-Dyeing Technique
The CHANGPHEL workshop has independently developed more than 600 proprietary colors, using Swiss eco-friendly dyes that are 100% water-soluble. No additional fixing agents are required to achieve a high standard of colorfastness, allowing the colors to develop a stable and lasting character with minimal intervention.
To this day, CHANGPHEL artisans continue to use the traditional copper-pot dyeing method for the hand space-dyeing of core-spun yarn. At the heart of this technique is the experienced hand of senior artisans, who control the temperature of the water and the duration of the dyeing process by experience. As the dye slowly penetrates the yarn, the natural white core of the fiber is preserved, creating rich layers of color. Yarn dyed in this way develops a distinctive texture and enduring color, making this technique one of the keys to achieving the distinctive quality and tactile character of CHANGPHEL Tibetan rugs.
Supercritical Fluid Dyeing
Another core dyeing technology developed at the CHANGPHEL workshop is a supercritical waterless dyeing technology jointly developed with Professor Zheng Guanghong, Director of the Dyeing and Finishing Professional Committee of the China Textile Engineering Society.
During the dyeing process, this patented technology uses supercritical carbon dioxide (CO₂) in its fluid state as the medium, allowing the dyes to penetrate the fibers without the use of water. In doing so, it reduces the consumption and waste of water resources associated with conventional dyeing methods.
