In Chang Qing’s brushwork, the dragon dissolves almost into a single flowing ink line. Winding, coiling and unfurling, the lines shift direction continuously, and the dragon’s form evolves naturally following the movement of the brush.
With one fluid stroke, shape follows intent; it reaches a sublime state amid free‑flowing movement.
CHANGPHEL follows the dragon’s rhythmic momentum, letting lines and hand‑weaving itself form the backbone of the composition. The roaming spirit of brush‑painting settles into the warp and weft of wool. Hand‑weaving extends the fluidity of those strokes, and the coiling dragon carries forth an enduring aura across the carpet’s undulating surface.
In the preface of a book, artist Chang Qing wrote: “When you refuse to fix your gaze upon a single focal point, the whole world becomes your viewfinder.”
For him, there exists no single measure for art. He moves fluidly across diverse mediums, bridging Eastern and Western painterly languages, and explores new possibilities with vivid creative energy.
This boundless creativity resonates deeply with CHANGPHEL’s mission of reinterpreting traditional crafts through a contemporary lens.
Starting from the Year of the Tiger (Ren‑yin), the artist created a series of zodiac‑themed artworks to celebrate the birth of his daughter. As years unfolded, his artistic journey intertwined with his daughter’s growth. Year after year, Chang Qing captured delicate, genuine observations of the rhythms of life with his brush.
Partnering with Chang Qing, CHANGPHEL translates these artworks onto Tibetan wool carpets. The fluid vitality on canvas is transformed into intricately woven threads by master artisans. Within the soft, rich texture of Northern Tibetan wool, the vibrant essence of life is brought to life once more.
