Running, stretching, gathering momentum — the gallant horses in Chang Qing’s brushwork perpetually stretch toward beyond the frame. Bold and muted, luminous and subdued hues layer over one another. The horses seem ready to burst past boundaries at any moment, galloping toward the boundless world outside the painting.

One stride forward, and the vast world unfolds.

CHANGPHEL allows diverse coloured yarns to blend and merge naturally within the warp and weft. From afar, colours echo one another to form a cohesive, fluid composition. Up close, intricately interwoven yarns reveal subtle gradations. Much like light sweeping across a galloping horse’s body, colours trace dynamic paths along the undulating fabric, sketching imaginings of forward pursuit.

In the preface of a book, artist Chang Qing wrote: “When you refuse to fix your gaze upon a single focal point, the whole world becomes your viewfinder.”
For him, there exists no single measure for art. He moves fluidly across diverse mediums, bridging Eastern and Western painterly languages, and explores new possibilities with vivid creative energy.

This boundless creativity resonates deeply with CHANGPHEL’s mission of reinterpreting traditional crafts through a contemporary lens.
Starting from the Year of the Tiger (Ren‑yin), the artist created a series of zodiac‑themed artworks to celebrate the birth of his daughter. As years unfolded, his artistic journey intertwined with his daughter’s growth. Year after year, Chang Qing captured delicate, genuine observations of the rhythms of life with his brush.

Partnering with Chang Qing, CHANGPHEL translates these artworks onto Tibetan wool carpets. The fluid vitality on canvas is transformed into intricately woven threads by master artisans. Within the soft, rich texture of Northern Tibetan wool, the vibrant essence of life is brought to life once more.

Chang Qing (Artist, Professor of Oil Painting at China Academy of Art)
Born in 1965 in Chengdu, Sichuan. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of China Academy of Art in 1989. He served as the inaugural President of Zhejiang Oil‑Painting Institute. Currently, he holds the positions of Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the Oil Painting Department of China Academy of Art, Director of the China Artists Association, Member of the Oil Painting Art Committee of China Artists Association, and Vice‑Chairman of Zhejiang Artists Association.

Chang Qing’s artistic practice spans multiple mediums including oil painting, ink wash, pastel and watercolour. His continuous exploration across diverse materials and painting styles has yielded an open‑ended and multifaceted body of work. In 2026, Chang Qing published Beyond Focus: An Oil Painter Who Loves Ink‑Wash Painting.

Looking back over six decades of his life and artistic career, “Beyond Focus” refers both to the openness and fluidity of his artistic language, as well as his way of engaging with the world: refusing to be confined to a single focal point, he sustains curiosity, perception and freedom amid an ever‑changing reality.
