In ancient China, the phoenix was revered as a sacred and auspicious bird, symbolising virtuous and enlightened figures.
Inspiration
Phoenixes take flight, wings spread wide
The rug features a double-border composition. The outermost border is a plain cream band. The inner band sits on a cream ground decorated with colourful phoenixes interspersed with assorted treasure motifs.
The central field rests on a tan ground, where eleven round phoenix medallions are neatly staggered across three rows.
Within each medallion, two phoenixes face one another, each holding a sprig of ganoderma in its beak. Their wings and tail feathers interconnect. With heads raised, wings outstretched, and flowing tails, they appear to swirl gracefully through the air. Scrolling cloud motifs and assorted treasure emblems fill the remaining field.
Shangshu Zhengyi (Correct Meaning of the Book of Documents) states: “The male is called feng and the female huang; they are divine birds. Their bearing is graceful and dignified. When the nine movements of music are performed in full, the phoenixes appear, while other birds and beasts dance before the nine movements are complete.”
An ancient verse states: "Phoenixes are in flight, their wings rustling; they soar up toward heaven."
Two phoenixes soaring side by side symbolise marital harmony, conjugal devotion, and a blissful union.
Distinct and natural, splendid and opulent
Warm yellow forms the base hue of this rug. Such vivid, saturated yellow is rarely seen in antique rugs.
Crafted from premium materials, the rug features cotton warp and weft with a hand-knotted wool pile. Densely knotted and dyed with natural plant pigments, the colours retain their richness over time, lending a subtle lustre to the surface.
The ornamentation combines regal elegance with delicate texture and a balanced, multi-tonal palette. The contrasting warm and cool shades of tan, cream, crimson, navy and lake blue create a striking visual rhythm. Selective two-tone gradient shading keeps the motifs crisp and natural while adding depth and a sense of magnificent opulence.
