In traditional Chinese folk culture, the frog’s head, tail, limbs, and belly are said to encompass the world, making it an auspicious symbol of opportunity and good fortune from all directions.

As celebrated in a well-known Chinese poetry, “In the fragrance of rice blossoms, people speak of a good harvest; the sound of frogs carries across the fields.” In traditional Chinese culture, the lively chorus of frogs among the rice paddies is closely associated with the harvest season. Their far-reaching calls evoke abundant crops and enduring prosperity, giving the frog an auspicious association with the arrival of wealth and good fortune.

In ancient Hindu traditions, the frog carries a broader cosmological significance. It was believed to connect the earthly realm with the cosmos and was associated with the coming of night.

During Japan’s Edo period, the Confucian scholar Kaibara Ekken wrote in Yamato Honzō of the belief that frogs ultimately return to their birthplace, no matter how far they travel. Associated with devotion to one’s homeland, the frog thus also became a symbol of safe return and the wish for a peaceful homecoming.
