Marker Lines Shape a 3D World
Los Angeles-based artist Katy Ann Gilmore is captivated by human perception of space.
She draws inspiration from undulating layered mountain ranges and rows of closely packed buildings. These grand natural landforms and architectural structures broaden her perception of space.
Using only a marker pen, she renders three-dimensional worlds built from intersecting lines, challenging our ingrained perceptions of space.
Whether on blank paper, bare walls or a Tibetan rug, the marriage of art and mathematics generates mesmerizing three-dimensional optical illusions on flat surfaces.
Lines Form Volume, Woven Textures Take Shape
For Gilmore, carefully arranged, repeating lines are a way to transcend dimensional boundaries; for Tibetan rug artisans, they echo a fundamental principle of weaving.
When Gilmore’s creations are reimagined on Tibetan rugs, the rich woven texture of the textile creates a fresh interplay with her illustrated three-dimensional spaces.
Everything begins with a single dot drawn by a marker and a strand of wool carried by the weaving shuttle. Texture and physical depth created by human hands give spatial illusions a far more tangible presence.
The result reveals that the allure of three-dimensional space extends far beyond the visual illusion itself.
