The outer border of this rug features a classic Kui pattern. Interlocking meander patterns connect the central motifs, while T-shaped ornaments are incorporated along the edges. Beyond the central design, the rug is free from unnecessary ornamentation.
The defining feature lies in the inner meander motifs. Consisting of continuous horizontal and vertical angular lines that form square or circular loops resembling the Chinese character “hui 回”, these patterns are named Huiwen, or meander patterns.
Meander patterns are widely used as dividers, edge bindings and decorative borders. Thanks to their continuous, unbroken form, they have come to symbolize enduring prosperity and everlasting good fortune.
