The lotus is known as “Padma” in Buddhist tradition. The lotus is deeply connected with Buddhism, symbolizing purity and wisdom. The blooming lotus is traditionally associated with the manifestation of Buddha-nature. Its blooming symbolizes that practitioners have attained a certain realm of wisdom.
The lotus also stands for the spiritual state of enlightenment. “The Bodhisattva contemplates thus: within every sentient being dwells this lotus of awakening, pure and undefiled within the Dharma realm, untouched by afflictions.”
To this day, the lotus is revered as a sacred symbol in Buddhism. The Buddhist symbolism of the lotus resonates with the ideals of serenity, joy and transcendence cherished in Eastern thought. Embodying pure virtue and serene wisdom, the lotus has long been venerated by Buddhist practitioners and beloved by virtuous people across the world.
Twelve Padma features a representative traditional design of figurative lotus blossoms. Weavers break down the number “twelve” into the auspicious number “nine” and the number “three”, assigning symbolic significance to each number through contrasting colours.
