Inspiration
Jointly presented by CHANGPHEL and STUDIO AUSTIN_SANDWICH, Dawa’s First Phantom Play in Southern Lhokha draws inspiration from the cosmology of Tibetan Buddhism.
The fantasies and contemplations found in the poetry of Tibetan poet Tsangyang Gyatso are transformed into contemporary visions of the sun, moon and stars, taking shape in Tibetan rugs that evoke a sense of stillness and timelessness.
Derived from Sanskrit, mandala refers to a sacred cosmic diagram. Shaped as a perfect, unbroken circle, it embodies the convergence of merit and wisdom.
Taking the mandala as its form, the design renders the four great elements — earth, water, fire and air — onto the rug through gentle brushwork, allowing ancient spiritual meaning and contemporary creativity to be experienced through touch.
A Wangden mat is traditionally used by monks for meditation.
The central field of the rug features carved sheared pile, while longer yarn tufts are preserved around the edges, creating ample space for the knees and legs when seated cross-legged.
The grey surface unfolds like the quadrants of the cosmos. Wool fringes of varying densities evoke the mist-like clouds and flowing waters of the Oshung valleys, together with the curling incense smoke rising within scripture halls, all rendered in the language of the weave.
Sit in meditation and feel yourself enveloped in warmth. You may find yourself carried into the great current of time, witnessing phenomena as countless as the sands of the Ganges, and awakening to your own true nature.
